谢谢 Ben。他提出的三个词分别是 painting、drawing 和picture。Ben 在问题里说，他知道这几个词都和艺术创作有关，但是不太清楚这三个词的区别究竟是什么。他的理解对，但不完全对。因为painting、drawing 和 picture 虽然都可以是描述风景、人物或静物的一种艺术形式, 但是它们的含义并不完全局限于艺术创作这一范畴。比如，以第一个词 painting 为例，除了指画作，绘画之外它也可以指刷浆和喷漆。请听例句：

Examples
Look at this lovely Christmas present he bought me, a large oil painting of my hometown.
看他给我买的圣诞礼物多好：是一张描写我家乡的大幅油画。

My sister has taken up painting as her new hobby.
我姐姐把学习绘画当作她的新爱好了。

I like everything except the paint in this room, I think the colour is a bit too dark.
这个房间除了墙上刷的漆之外我都喜欢，我觉得颜色有点儿太深了。

此处 paint是名词，指墙上刷的粉或漆。不过这个词也可以作动词，比如，I’m painting my bedroom. 我正在粉刷我的卧室。

第二个词 drawing 可以作名词，一般指素描，或用铅笔、粉笔绘制的草图。不过大家一定要知道，这个词的动词是 to draw，出现的频率很高。比如，画张图就可以用 to draw a picture 来表达。请听例句。

Examples
A: You are pretty good at drawing, aren’t you?
你素描不错吧？
B: Not bad. Why?
还可以吧。怎么有事吗？
A: I need someone to draw a few logos that I can send to my publishers.
我需要有人帮我画几个商标，我可以发给我的出版商。
B: Ok, if you tell me your ideas I’ll give it a go.
好吧，如果你告诉我你的想法，我来试试看。

David loves drawing trains. This is his latest drawing of a steam engine.
大卫喜欢画火车。这是他最近画的一张蒸汽火车的素描。

George designs gadgets on his computer, but he always does a quick hand drawing first.

最后我们来看第三个词 picture。这个词意思很广，远远超出了前面的两个词。可以表示用手绘的画、电脑绘制的图像、印刷出来的照片，以及拍摄出来的照片等等。请看例句。

Can you draw me a picture of the layout of your kitchen?
你能不能把你厨房的布局给我画张图？ 

I think you need a couple of bright pictures to liven up your lounge.
我觉得你的客厅需要两张色彩明亮的画儿，来增加一些活力。

Sorry, I don’t have any pictures of my two-year-old daughter, but I’ll bring some next week to show you.
对不起，我没带我两岁女儿的照片，不过下周我会带一些来给你看看。

Hang on, I just need to download a picture for my homework.
等一下，我的作业只需要下载一张图片就可以了。

另外有个和 picture 相关的常用短语，我想介绍给大家。请听以下两句话，看你能不能猜出句子的意思。

Examples
Please keep me in the picture. I want to know what wedding presents to buy them.
请什么进展都请告诉我一声，我好决定给他们买什么结婚礼物。

I haven’t been invited to the party: I guess I’m not in the picture anymore.
我没有被邀请去参加聚会，看来我已经不再是圈儿内人了。

刚才第一个例句里的 to keep someone in the picture 意思让一个人了解知悉情况。第二句里的 not in the picture any more 表示不再是圈儿内人了。
