How do you say ‘independence’? There are four syllables: in-de-pen-dence. The stress is on the third syllable: in-de-PEN-dence. ‘e’ is pronounced /ɪ/, /e/ then /ə/ all in the same word. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has led celebrations as the country marks 70 years since independence. In a ceremony at the Red Fort in Delhi, he praised India’s progress since British rule ended in 1947. ‘Independence’ means freedom from control by another country or organisation.
