For 900 years, kings and queens have been crowned at Westminster Abbey. On the 6th of May next year, the Archbishop of Canterbury will conduct the coronation, anointing, blessing and consecrating King Charles III.

In 1953, 8,000 people were in Westminster Abbey to see Queen Elizabeth II crowned. It was the first televised coronation – more than 27 million people watched across the UK. It was an event steeped in pomp and pageantry.

Next year’s ceremony will look different. Palace sources say it’ll be shorter, smaller and more diverse, reflecting the role of a modern monarch, while still being rooted in long-standing traditions.
