Over recent years, English National Opera has received around 12 million pounds a year from the Arts Council – around twice what it gets in box office receipts.

Next year, it’s off the list. It will be offered a transitional grant of 17 million pounds to help it reorganise and create a base out of London, possibly Manchester.
