2024-07-26 Future plans – Tenses with Georgie

BE + GOING TO + BASE VERB

Use this for loose plans and intentions. You can use it for plans you’re sure about too. 

  • I think I‘m just gonna have a chilled night at home this evening.
  • My sister and I are gonna go to the beach on Saturday.

I am (not) going to walk > I’m (not) gonna walk
You are (not) going to walk > You’re (not) gonna walk
She is (not) going to walk > She’s (not) gonna walk
He is (not) going to walk > He’s (not) gonna walk
It is (not) going to walk > It’s (not) gonna walk
We are (not) going to walk > We’re (not) gonna walk
They are (not) going to walk > They’re (not) gonna walk

PRESENT CONTINUOUS

Use this for fixed plans when you know the time and place. 

  • I‘m going to a wedding at the weekend as one of my friends is getting married.
  • My parents are moving house next Friday.

I am (not) walking > I’m (not) walking 
You are (not) walking > You’re (not) walking 
He is (not) walking > He’s (not) walking
She is (not) walking > She’s (not) walking
It is (not) walking > It’s (not) walking
We are (not) walking > We’re (not) walking
They are (not) walking > They’re (not) walking

WILL + (PROBABLY) + BASE VERB

Use this to make predictions about what you’ll do in the future. 

  • When I visit my parents, we‘ll probably play a few board games and have a chit-chat.
  • I‘ll probably go home after a couple of drinks with my friend.

I will (not) walk > I’ll walk / I won’t walk 
You will (not) walk > You’ll walk / You won’t walk
She will (not) walk > She’ll walk / She won’t walk
He will (not) walk > He’ll walk / He won’t walk
It will (not) walk > It’ll walk / It won’t walk
We will (not) walk > We’ll walk / We won’t walk
They will (not) walk > They’ll walk / They won’t walk 

MIGHT + BASE VERB

Use this when you don’t have a solid plan, but you want to mention some possibilities or options. 

  • I don’t have any weekend plans, but I might go to that new museum exhibition. It looks good!
  • I might have sushi for lunch, but I haven’t decided yet.
