Introduction

An area can be a large geographic place, or a smaller place like a room. There are some words that we often use together. These are called collocations. Learn some of the verbs that we often use with the noun ‘area’ with Georgie.

Common collocations with ‘area’

live in an area
If you live in an area, you spend most of your time in a place, and may call it your home. 

  • My neighbourhood is so noisy. I’d much prefer to live in a quieter area

move to an area 
If you move to an area, you change the location of where you live.

  • When I earn more money, I’ll move to a more attractive area

leave / move away from an area 
If you leave or move away from an area, you remove yourself from your current location. 

  • The city centre was becoming increasingly polluted, so Martha moved away from the area with her family.

cover an area
If something covers an area, it extends over a specific location. This can be about things like internet or searching for things over an area.

  • The new Wi-Fi system can cover the area of an entire office building.

An area can be a large geographic place, or a smaller place like a room. 

You can live in an area, but if you don’t like it, you can move to a new area, which means you change the location of where you live.   

live in an urban area, but when I’m older, I think I’ll move to a rural area.

If you move to a new area, that means you leave or move away from the current area.

There was a horrible smell of burning in the kitchen, so I decided to leave the area.

Covering an area means extending over a specific location. This can be about things like internet or searching for things over an area.

The search and rescue team covered an area of 50km in just two days.
