Introduction

Alejandra has sent us a question. She wants to know how to learn new phrasal verbs without getting overwhelmed (freaking out!).

Sian’s top tips!

1. Learn phrasal verbs in the context they’re used in. Learn phrasal verbs used in the kitchen and then practise them when you’re cooking, or learn phrasal verbs frequently used at work and then practise using them at work. Here’s a page full of phrasal verbs in context to help you – Phrasal Verbs with Georgie.

2. Write down new vocabulary. Make sure you write these 4 things: The phrasal verb, the meaning, an example sentence, any pronunciation help. When writing pronunciation, do whatever feels comfortable for you. You can use the IPA e.g. /ˈhʌˌrɪjˈʌp/ or just write how the word sounds to you. Mark the word stress and any connected speech.

Phrasal verb: hurry up
Meaning: go faster
Example sentence: Please hurry up. We’re going to be late!
Pronunciation: /ˈhʌˌrɪjˈʌp/
Stress on the first syllable and ‘up’ hurry up
                        hurry_up (link the words together)

3. Don’t forget the grammar! Does the phrasal verb need an object? is it a direct or indirect object?

  • hurry up = no object, put on (something) = an object

Is the phrasal verb separable or inseparable?

  • get into (something) = inseparable, hold (something) back = separable

4. Learn phrasal verbs that interest you and that are relevant to your life and interests. Then use these to make example sentences that you would actually use or say!

  • The elephant put a coat on. (not realistic)
  • Wait! I need to put my coat on.  (realistic)

5. The best way to learn phrasal verbs is to use them in real life! Practise using them in real conversations, write them down in a diary, use them on social media posts.

6. Remember, phrasal verbs aren’t always informal, depsite what you may have been told. Here are some phrasal verbs used at work:

  • We’ve had to bring forward the meeting as there’s lots of data to go over, but first I’ll hand out the documents. I’ll set up another meeting for later in the week.
