Introduction

What would you say about finding some new English phrases to learn? There are a few phrases in English with the word ‘say’. Learn some of them here with Phil and then practise using them with the quiz.

say a lot about someone
show you what they are really like

  • The way people treat shop assistants says a lot about them.

have your say
give your opinion about something

  • Please keep your questions until the end. There’ll be some time for you to have your say.

have a lot to say for yourself
someone who has a lot to say for themselves likes to give their opinion all the time

  • What did Nahuel say? He always has a lot to say for himself.

to say the least
used to emphasise something – often when saying that something is even worse that previously thought

  • Investing in that company right now is brave, to say the least.

Something says a lot about someone if it shows you what they’re really like – it’s often the way someone behaves.
 
The way he ignored my email says a lot about him.
 
You have your say when you get to give your opinion about something.
 
I want to give everyone a chance to have their say at the end of the meeting.
 
Now, if you’re someone who likes to give your opinion all the time, you have a lot to say for yourself, especially if people think you do it too much.
 
That new manager has got a lot to say for himself, but I don’t think his ideas are all that good.
 
We use to say the least to say that something is actually even worse than we’ve said – it’s a way to emphasise something.
 
The painting is unusual, to say the least.
