Introduction

A design is a plan or drawing of something, usually based around how something will look. There are some words that we often use together. These are called collocations. Learn some of the verbs that we often use with the noun ‘design’ with Beth.

Common collocations with ‘design’

come up with a design
If you come up with a design, you think about and plan what your design will be.

  • I’ll come up with a design for your personalised stationery. 

produce a design
If you produce a design, you make your design a reality by drawing it or making it visually.

  • Can you produce a new design for a water fountain? The water goes everywhere with this old one. 

follow a design
If you follow a design, you use someone else’s design for yourself.

  • I love these geometric patterns – I’m going to follow this design for my kitchen. 

feature a design
If you feature a design, all or part of the design is used as part of something else.

  • My design is going to feature in a magazine!

You can come up with a design. This means you think about and plan what you design will be.

I looked at different colours and shapes I liked, then came up with the design for my logo.

If you follow a design, you use someone else’s design for yourself. This means you use the same basic features, but change other parts to fit what you want.

If a design is featured, it means the design, or part of the design, is shown somewhere, as part of something else. For example, your logo design might be featured in a graphics blog online.
