Hello and welcome to The English We Speak, where we explain phrases used by fluent English speakers so that you can use them as well. I’m Feifei.

Beth
And I’m Beth. Feifei, are you OK?

Feifei
I am. I’ve just found out that a song I’ve been waiting to hear has just dropped. I really need to go and listen to it!

Beth
‘Dropped’? Well, we all know ‘dropped’, but can I just check you don’t mean a song has just dropped on the floor…

Feifei
No! In this context, ‘dropped’ means something has been released. It’s a singer I love, and they’ve been teasing this song, but I didn’t know it was coming out today!

Beth
Ah, you didn’t know it was dropping today. So, we can use ‘drop’ for something new and exciting. And it’s not just songs that drop. A trailer for a film can be dropped, or a fashion brand could drop a limited edition of something.

Feifei
Yes. And you know what? A new season of my favourite TV series has just dropped. I can’t wait.

Beth
I think I know what you’re talking about, and I’m also very excited.

Feifei
Let’s hear some more examples of ‘drop’.

Examples
I’m so excited. The latest edition of my favourite video game’s just dropped.

So, I started reading a fantasy book series and the next book has just dropped, so I need to hurry up and finish the one I’m on now.

Have you seen the news that’s just dropped? There’s going to be another public holiday this year.

Beth
‘Drop’ is especially common when talking about music, fashion or tech, like we heard in the examples. It means it’s been released with lots of excitement.

Feifei
And there are other ways we can say ‘dropped’ or ‘released’. You could say something is ‘just out’ or has ‘just landed’.

Beth
Yes. In fact, you know that song you wanted to hear that landed this morning…I’ve just downloaded it. Shall we go and listen?

Feifei
Yes, please! We’ll be back next time with another useful English phrase. See you soon.

Beth
Bye!
